Can an air purifier lower carbon dioxide (CO₂)?
Indoor CO₂ is a supporting indicator of occupant respiration, outdoor-air supply, and ventilation. Typical particle-removal air purifiers are not primarily designed to remove CO₂, so check ventilation first and interpret any product result only for its stated model, initial concentration, operating time, and conditions.

Indoor CO₂ rises mainly through occupant respiration and varies with occupant count, dwell time, outdoor-air supply, ventilation method, and air distribution. Interpret it with occupancy density, sensor placement, and measurement conditions.
Ventilation and air treatment do not replace one another
Ventilation introduces outdoor air to dilute and exhaust CO₂ and pollutants, while air treatment circulates indoor air to reduce certain particles, gases, or microorganisms. IAQ management considers ventilation, source control, and purpose-appropriate air treatment together.

Because occupants continue generating CO₂ while outdoor-air entry occurs, a laboratory reduction rate cannot be converted directly to an actual room’s final concentration and is not a substitute for ventilation.
